Anne Hidalgo: A Parisian Pioneer

Anne Hidalgo, a trailblazing French politician, has made history as the first female Mayor of Paris since its inception. Born on June 19, 1959, in San Fernando, Spain, she relocated to Lyon, France, with her parents, Antonio and Marie Hidalgo, in 1961.

A Fleeing Ancestor and a Family of Social Justice

Hidalgo's paternal grandfather, Antonio Hidalgo, a Spanish communist, fled Francoist Spain in 1937, traversing the Pyrenees on a donkey. He returned to Spain two years later, only to be arrested and sentenced to death. The sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment, from which he was released three years later.

Career Trajectory from Social Work to Politics

After earning degrees in social work and law, Hidalgo worked as a labor inspector from 1984 to 1993. She then joined the Ministry of Labor, serving as a Delegate for Professional Training. From 1995 to 1996, she participated in a mission with the International Labor Organization in Geneva. In 1996, she worked at Générale des Eaux.

Embracing politics in 1997, Hidalgo held various positions in the cabinets of Ministers Martine Aubry, Nicole Pery, and Marilise Lebranchu. From 2001 to 2014, she served as Deputy Mayor of Paris under Socialist Bertrand Delanoë.

Historic Victory and Re-election as Mayor of Paris

In 2014, Hidalgo ran for Mayor of Paris, facing off against center-right candidate Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet in the second round. With her victory, Hidalgo became the first woman to assume the mayoral office. She was re-elected to a second term in the 2020 municipal elections.

Presidential Aspirations and Electoral Setback

On October 14, 2021, Hidalgo became the official Socialist Party candidate for the 2022 presidential election. Despite her campaign efforts, she finished tenth in the first round, garnering only 1.75% of the vote. She urged her supporters to back Emmanuel Macron in the runoff.

Personal Life and Awards

Hidalgo is married to Jean-Marc Germain, a Socialist Party colleague, and has a son, Arthur, born in 2002. She has two other children, Mathieu (1986) and Elsa (1988), from a previous marriage.

In recognition of her contributions, Hidalgo has received numerous honors, including:

Commander of the Order of Isabella the Catholic (2010)

Knight of the Legion of Honour (2012)
Commander of the Order of the Polar Star (2014)
Knight of the Order of Civil Merit (2015)
Knight of the Order of Honour (Armenia, 2017)
