Julianne Smith: American Diplomat and Foreign Policy Advisor
Julianne Smith is an American diplomat and foreign policy advisor serving as the United States Permanent Representative to NATO in the administration of President Joe Biden.
Early Life and Education
Smith earned a Bachelor of Arts in communications and French from Xavier University and a Master's degree in international relations from American University. She also studied French at the University of Paris in France and German at Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich.
Career
From 2000 to 2003, Smith served as a program officer at the German Marshall Fund. She then joined the Center for Strategic and International Studies as a senior fellow. She served as the Director of European and NATO Policy at the U.S. Department of Defense from 2009 to 2012. From April 2012 to June 2013, she worked as Deputy National Security Advisor to then-Vice President Joe Biden.
In 2014, Smith joined the Center for a New American Security think tank. She also spent a year as a public policy fellow with the Robert Bosch Foundation in Germany and as a senior advisor at consulting firm WestExec Advisors.
In 2021, Smith became Senior Advisor to the U.S. Secretary of State.
NATO AppointmentIn June 2021, President Biden announced his intention to nominate Smith as the U.S. Permanent Representative to NATO. Her nomination was confirmed by the U.S. Senate in November 2021.

Smith has written columns for The New York Times, Lawfare, Washington Monthly, Foreign Affairs, and The National Interest. She has also appeared on NPR programs including 1A, All Things Considered, and Morning Edition.
