Abu Bakr ibn Umar
Abu Bakr ibn Umar was a Berber chief of the Lamtuna tribe and a companion of Abdullah ibn Yasin, the founder of the Almoravid dynasty.
Military Leadership
After the death of his brother Yahya in 1056, Abu Bakr became the military leader of the Almoravids. Following Abdullah ibn Yasin's demise in 1058 or 1059, disputes arose among the Almoravids remaining in the Sahara, escalating into open warfare. Abu Bakr, then in the Maghreb, was compelled to return to the Sahara to restore order.
Appointment of Yusuf ibn Tashfin
Abu Bakr, influenced by his wife Zineb, appointed his nephew, Yusuf ibn Tashfin, as commander of the Almoravid forces in the Maghreb. Abu Bakr swiftly pacified the Berber tribes of the Sahara and Senegal, enabling him to direct his attention to the Sudanese Negroes.
Return to the Maghreb
After the Sudanese campaign, Abu Bakr returned to the Maghreb in 1071-1072. However, witnessing Yusuf's growing power and leadership prowess, he acknowledged Yusuf's superior claim to rule. Abu Bakr abdicated and returned to the Sahara, dedicating himself to spreading Islam among the neighboring African tribes until his death in 1087.
