Early Life and Political Beginnings

Achiel Van Acker was born into a large family in Bruges, Belgium. Despite not receiving a formal education, he entered the Bruges city council in 1926 and was elected to the Belgian Chamber of Representatives the following year. As a member of the Belgian Labour Party, he quickly rose through the political ranks.

World War II and Resistance

During World War II, Van Acker played a crucial role in the Belgian resistance. He organized and led the underground Belgian Socialist Party, which had been established on the foundation of the Labour Party.
