Ada Clement: A Pioneer in Music Education
Founding the San Francisco ConservatoryIn 1917, Ada Clement, an accomplished American pianist and music educator, established a piano school in San Francisco with her colleague, Lillian Hodghead. The school quickly gained recognition, and in 1923, Clement expanded it into the San Francisco Conservatory.
Collaboration with Ernest Bloch
To enhance the conservatory's offerings, Clement invited acclaimed composer Ernest Bloch to join the faculty. Bloch served as the conservatory's director from 1925 to 1930, bringing a wealth of knowledge and experience to the institution.
Leading the Conservatory
Following Bloch's departure, Clement and Hodghead resumed their leadership of the conservatory, steering it through a period of growth and innovation. They remained at the helm until 1951.
Personal and Professional Struggles
Clement's later years were marked by a difficult battle with cancer. During this time, Bloch, who had become a close friend, moved into her home and provided her with musical solace. After Clement's passing, Bloch dedicated a poignant composition, "In Memoriam," to her memory.
