Reign of Adad-nirari II: Reign of Expansion and Conquest
Adad-nirari II ascended to the throne of Assyria as the successor of Ashur-dan II, inheriting a kingdom plagued by instability. His reign, spanning from 912 to 891 BCE, marked a significant turning point in Assyrian history.
Military Campaigns and Territorial Expansion
Adad-nirari II embarked on numerous military campaigns to expand and consolidate Assyrian territories. In 910 BCE, he launched an expedition into the mountainous Habhu region, subduing major settlements along the banks of the Ruru River. His forces then marched through Kumme and inflicted a crushing defeat on the Kummanians, who acknowledged Assyrian sovereignty. Additionally, he conquered Kadmuhe and extended Assyrian control to the source of the Tigris River, bringing the Alzi region to submission.
Victories Over Babylon and Naïri-Urartu
Adad-nirari II's victories against Babylonian rulers, Shamas-muddamiq and Nabu-shum-ukin I, in 905 and 895 BCE, respectively, resolved boundary disputes in Assyria's favor. He annexed Arrapha and expanded the kingdom's southern border close to Dur-Kurigalzu and Sippar.
He also engaged in conflicts with the Naïri-Urartu chiefs at the turn of the 9th and 8th centuries BCE. According to Adad-nirari II's own accounts, he "went on campaign to the lands of Naïri four times." His inscriptions provide evidence of his conquests in Inner Habhu, including the capture of Nahi and Ashnahu, and his subjugation of the Nabdu and Alzi regions.
Expansion of Assyrian Dominion
Adad-nirari II's royal title reflected the vast territories he brought under Assyrian rule, including:
- Lulume
- Habhi (Habhu)- Zamua
- The passes of Namar
- Kumani
- Mehri
- Salua
- Urartu
Significantly, the designation of Salua as distinct from Urartu suggests the growing prominence of the Saluan region within the Urartu kingdom.
Assistance to Kumme and Suppression of Rebellions
In 895 and 894 BCE, Adad-nirari II intervened to protect the city of Kumme from Habhu attacks. He burned Habhu settlements, confiscated their harvests, and imposed heavier tributes on the surviving population. His forces also destroyed and burned towns that had resisted paying tribute.
Length of Reign and Legacy
The Assyrian Royal List records Adad-nirari II's reign as lasting for 21 years. His conquests and territorial expansion laid the foundation for the rise of the Neo-Assyrian Empire, positioning it as a major power in the region.
