Biography of Adam Rainer

Adam Rainer was born in 1899 in Graz, Austria-Hungary. His parents and his brother were of average height, but the word 'average' does not apply to any period of Adam's life. At the age of 18, Adam's height was only 138 cm, according to medical examinations. Another source even states that his height was as low as 122 cm. According to classification, adults whose height is below 147 cm are considered dwarfs. The following year, Adam made another attempt to join the army, and his height was recorded as 143 cm. Naturally, he was rejected both times because soldiers of such small stature were not accepted.

Challenges and Growth

Adam's challenges as a short young man were compounded by his disproportionately large hands and feet. Until the age of 21, he had to wear size 43 shoes, and his stubborn feet only stopped growing at size 53. No one expected Adam's fate to take such a dramatic turn. At the age of 26, he began to grow at an astonishing rate. From 143 cm, he shot up to 218 cm by the age of 32. Doctors noted that Adam would have grown even taller if not for severe spinal curvature.

Health Issues

As he aged, Adam's spinal problems only worsened. Gigantism and a diseased spine confined Adam to his bed for the rest of his life. He lost sight in his right eye and had poor vision in his left. Over time, his hearing deteriorated, and his left ear stopped functioning completely. In approximately 1930, doctors E. Mandl and F. Windholz discovered a tumor on Adam's pituitary gland. This pathological growth was responsible for his sudden growth during a period when people usually stop growing. The tumor also caused partial blindness as it compressed his optic nerves.

The Diagnosis and Surgery

The pituitary tumor led to a condition known as acromegaly, in which the pituitary gland produces an excessive amount of growth hormones. The protruding forehead and jaw of Adam, as well as his thick lips that extended beyond his widely spaced teeth, supported the diagnosis of acromegaly. Despite having little hope for success, Adam underwent surgery. The tumor was removed in 1930, but Adam did not stop growing, albeit at a slower pace.

The Tallest Man in Austria

Adam's spinal problems continued to worsen over the next 19 years of his life. At the age of 51, his height reached an extreme height of 234 cm, with a weight of 109 kg. Adam Rainer passed away on March 4, 1950. During his lifetime, he was the tallest man in Austria. He remains the only person in the world who was officially recognized as both a dwarf and a giant.
