Early Life and Education

The Austro-American pianist Alfred Baller was born in Vienna, Austria. He pursued his musical education at the Vienna Conservatory and subsequently embarked on a successful concert career.

Persecution and Escape

In 1938, Baller, who was Jewish, was brutally attacked by Nazi storm troopers who broke both his hands. Undeterred, he fled with his fiancée to Hungary and later to Yugoslavia before finally reaching the United States in December.

Collaboration with Yehudi Menuhin

In 1941, Baller settled with renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin and became his accompanist for 15 years. Together, they performed numerous concerts for Allied soldiers during World War II.

Alma Trio

In 1944, with Menuhin's blessing, Baller co-founded the Alma Trio with cellist Gabor Rejtő and violinist Jenő Lehner. He remained a member of the trio until 1971.

Teaching and Legacy

After his performing career, Baller taught at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and Stanford University's music department. Among his notable students was pianist Jerome Rose. Alfred Baller's musical legacy continues to inspire and influence generations of musicians.
