Military Career

Saint-Cyr and the General Staff Academy

In 1884, the young soldier graduated from the prestigious Saint-Cyr Military School. Subsequently, in 1905, he joined the elite General Staff Academy.

Service in Marine Infantry and Suppression of the Boxer Rebellion

His military service included a stint in the Marine Infantry. He also actively participated in quelling the Boxer Rebellion in 1903.

World War I

Initial Division Command

At the outbreak of World War I in September 1914, he assumed command of the 33rd Infantry Division.

Promotion and Corps Command

In February 1915, he was promoted to Divisional General and took charge of the 1st Army Corps. He led his troops in the defense of Verdun and the Somme offensive.

Command of the 2nd Army

In late 1916, he was entrusted with the command of the 2nd Army.
Eastern Front and Salonika
Eastern Army Command

In December 1917, he was appointed to lead the Eastern Army on the Salonika Front. This multinational force comprised French, English, Serbian, Greek, Italian, and Russian troops.

Return to France

However, in June 1918, he was unexpectedly summoned back to France and became the Military Governor of Paris.
