Duke of Nassau

Adolphe was born to William, Duke of Nassau, and his first wife, Louise of Saxe-Altenburg. He ascended to the throne of Nassau on August 30, 1839, following his father's death.

Prussian Annexation

During the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, Adolphe allied with the Austrian Empire. However, after Austria's defeat, Nassau was annexed by Prussia.

Grand Duke of Luxembourg

In 1890, when Wilhelmina, Queen of the Netherlands, was denied the right to inherit Luxembourg due to the Salic law, the Grand Duchy was passed to the 73-year-old Duke Adolphe. The Grand Dukes of Luxembourg today are descendants of Adolphe through female lines.

Marriages

Adolphe married twice. His first wife, Elizabeth Mikhailovna, was a Russian grand duchess who died less than a year later. In 1851, he married Adelheid Marie of Anhalt-Dessau, with whom he had five children, of whom only two survived to become Prince and Princess of Luxembourg.
