Biography of Adrian Nastase
Adrian Nastase was born on June 22, 1950, into an intellectual family. He completed his law degree at the University of Bucharest in 1973. After 14 years, he defended his doctoral dissertation and became a specialist in human rights. During the Chausescu regime, he was a member of the Romanian Communist Youth Organization. His political career began in January 1990.
Political Career
Adrian Nastase joined Ion Iliescu, the first Romanian president after the fall of the dictatorship. He was elected to parliament and served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs before becoming the Speaker of the Chamber of Deputies. In 2000, Nastase became the Prime Minister. He is currently the leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party.
Personal Life and Hobbies
Nicknamed "Bonbonel" (Candy) by journalists due to his full figure, Adrian Nastase is now referred to as the "Emperor" within his party. He has expressed his intention to run for president in the upcoming elections, with a high chance of success. Nastase believes that Romania's neglect of its relationship with Russia is a "shameful ideological complex inherited from Chausescu." However, he also emphasizes the importance of Romania's membership in NATO and the European Union.
Outside of politics, Nastase is an avid collector of antique books and paintings. He leads the Hunters and Fishermen Union and serves as the honorary chairman of the Tennis Federation. He is known to entertain journalists at his museum-like apartment in Bucharest as well as his luxurious villa in the Carpathian resort of Cornu. Nastase's wife, Dana, heads the "Romania of the Third Millennium" foundation, which supports young talents and orphaned children. The couple has two sons, Andrei and Mihnea, who attend an American school in Bucharest with an annual tuition fee of $20,000.
