Biography of Jean Charest

Jean Charest was born in the town of Sherbrooke in 1958. He obtained a law degree from the University of Sherbrooke and practiced law for four years. In 1984, at the age of 26, Charest decided to enter Canadian politics as a Member of Parliament for Sherbrooke, representing the Progressive Conservative Party. Two years later, at the age of 28, he became the Minister of Youth and Sports, making him the youngest minister in Canadian history. He later went on to lead the ministries of Environment, Industry, and Science, and was responsible for the development of Quebec.

Charest gained widespread recognition in 1995 when he served as the vice-president of the "NO" committee during the preparation for the referendum on Quebec sovereignty, which ended in defeat for the separatist movement. In 1998, Charest was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec from his hometown constituency of Sherbrooke and assumed the leadership of the Quebec Liberal Party. Shortly after, he became the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly. During this time, he also published his autobiography, "My Journey to Quebec."

Charest is married and has two children. After the recent elections, he once again became the Premier of Quebec, a position he has held since 2003.
