Adrienne Clarkson Biography

Adrienne Clarkson, born in Hong Kong in 1940, became the 26th Governor General of Canada in October 1999. She was the second woman to hold this prestigious position and the first immigrant to represent the official head of state, Queen Elizabeth II, in Canada.

Education and Career

Clarkson and her family immigrated to Canada in 1942 when she was only three years old. In 1962, she graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in English literature. She then continued her education at the University of Paris-Sorbonne.

Clarkson gained recognition in the country through her 30-year career at the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), where she hosted several popular cultural and educational programs. Her programs often focused on the ethical aspects of relationships between people from different national groups in Canada. In addition to her television work, Clarkson has also written and directed four documentaries and feature films, as well as authored three novels.

Cultural Contributions

Clarkson is known for her extensive involvement in various cultural institutions in Canada. She served as the chairperson of several museums and became the first representative from a non-European country to be elected as the president of the prestigious International Music Centre in Vienna. The International Music Centre brings together over 230 leading producers of audiovisual cultural programs that promote classical music. Clarkson has also received honorary doctorates from several universities.

Adrienne Clarkson is married to journalist and writer John Ralston Saul.
