Biography of Levy Mwanawasa
Levy Mwanawasa was born on September 3, 1948. He completed his law degree from the University of Zambia in 1973 and subsequently worked as a consultant in various law firms.
Political Career
In 1990, Mwanawasa played a crucial role in the registration of the Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) as a full-fledged political party. The following year, he ran as the MMD candidate in the elections and was elected as the Vice President of Zambia.
In 1996, Mwanawasa contested the presidential elections but was defeated by Frederick Chiluba. However, his determination and commitment to serving the nation did not waver.
Fight Against Corruption
On December 27, 2001, Mwanawasa was elected as the President of Zambia. During his tenure, he initiated an extensive campaign to combat corruption and the plundering of national wealth. Under his leadership, even his predecessor, Frederick Chiluba, was arrested on charges of embezzling nearly $30 million that was intended for humanitarian aid.
