Aleksandr Ivanovich Medvedko: Career Overview
Aleksandr Ivanovich Medvedko is a prominent Ukrainian attorney who has served as the Prosecutor General of Ukraine on multiple occasions.
Early Life and Legal Career
Medvedko was born on July 25, 1955, in Iskrivka, Ukraine. He graduated from the Kharkiv Law Institute in 1980 and began his career in the prosecutor's office. From 1980 to 1992, he held various positions in the Donetsk region prosecutor's office, including assistant and senior assistant prosecutor, as well as senior investigator.
Rise Through the Ranks
In 1992, Medvedko was appointed prosecutor of Kostyantynivka, Donetsk region. He later became the head of the prosecutor's office's Department of Supervision over the Legality of Operational-Investigative Activities, Inquiries, and Pre-Trial Investigations in Donetsk. In 2001, he was made First Deputy Prosecutor of Luhansk region.
Deputy Prosecutor General
In July 2002, Medvedko was appointed Deputy Prosecutor General of Ukraine. He served in this role until November 2005, when he was appointed Prosecutor General of Ukraine.
First Term as Prosecutor General
During his first term as Prosecutor General, Medvedko reopened investigations into the falsification of court rulings that allegedly removed convictions from Viktor Yanukovych, the former prime minister. He also closed the investigation into the alleged suicide of former Interior Minister Yuri Kravchenko.
Dismissal and Reappointment
In April 2007, Medvedko was dismissed as Prosecutor General. However, in May 2007, he was reappointed as First Deputy Prosecutor General under Svyatoslav Piskun. In June 2007, Medvedko was once again appointed Prosecutor General.
Second Term as Prosecutor General
During his second term, Medvedko resumed the investigation into the murder of journalist Georgiy Gongadze. He also clashed with the Ministry of Defense over corruption and crime in the military.
Later Career
In December 2007, Medvedko resigned as Prosecutor General and returned to private practice. He has since remained active in Ukrainian legal circles, providing legal advice and commentary on various legal matters.
Personal Life
Medvedko is married and has a daughter. He is a Counselor of Justice, first class.
