Nigerian Model, the First Black Miss World

Agbani Darego, a Nigerian model and beauty pageant contestant, made history as the first African black Miss World. Born in Abonnema, Rivers State, Darego grew up in a difficult environment as one of eight children. At the age of 10, she was sent to a boarding school to protect her from her mother's breast cancer. Two years later, her mother passed away, which had a profound impact on Darego and toughened her.

Aspiration to be a Model

As a teenager, Darego dreamed of becoming a model. Despite her conservative father's disapproval, she participated in the "M-Net Face of Africa" modeling competition. However, she did not make it to the finals. Nevertheless, this experience marked the beginning of her career, and soon after, Darego started appearing in print ads for the "Collectables" boutique chain.

Success as Miss Nigeria

Darego achieved true success after winning the "Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria" pageant. Contrary to rumors, she did not dethrone Valerie Peterside, who held the title of Miss Nigeria. Alongside her official duties, Darego managed to pursue her studies in Computer Science at the University of Port Harcourt. In 2001, she represented Nigeria in the Miss Universe pageant and reached the semi-finals, securing the 7th position. She was the only black semi-finalist that year and the only finalist to choose a swimsuit instead of a bikini.

Victory as Miss World

In November 2001, Darego achieved a remarkable victory in the Miss World pageant, becoming the first indigenous African woman south of the Sahara to earn such a prestigious title. Her demanding schedule as Miss World required her to travel extensively, which led her to leave the University of Port Harcourt. Later, she resumed her studies at New York University, this time focusing on psychology as her main area of specialization.

Modeling Career

Darego signed contracts with both Next Model Management and Ford Models. She has successfully pursued a career in modeling and continues to make a name for herself in the fashion industry. Agbani Darego's achievements have paved the way for other black models and have made her an influential figure in the world of beauty and fashion.
