Club Career: Childhood Star to European Transfer Rumours
Elmohamady's footballing journey began in 2003 at Ghazl El-Mahalla. At only 17 years of age, he joined the first team in 2004. In 2006, he signed with ENPPI, where he transitioned from his position as a striker to a right-back. His remarkable performance caught the attention of Egypt's national team coach, Hassan Shehata, who called him up in 2007.
Despite interest from European clubs, ENPPI initially resisted offers for Elmohamady. Hertha Berlin's financial terms fell short, and Rapid Bucharest's bid was rejected.
English Destination: Premier League Debut with Sunderland
On January 31, 2009, Sunderland acquired Elmohamady on a loan deal. He made his debut in a 2-2 draw against Birmingham City. Impressed by his performance, Sunderland purchased him from ENPPI, securing him until 2014.
Stint at Hull City: Temporary Loan and Permanent Move
Elmohamady joined Hull City on loan in August 2012, reuniting with former Sunderland manager Steve Bruce. He scored his first goal against Leeds in September and assisted in two other goals, showcasing his versatility. Sunderland recalled him in January, but Hull reacquired him until the end of the season. In 2013, he was named Hull City Player of the Year. In June, he signed a permanent contract with the club.
Aston Villa Era: Reuniting with Steve Bruce
On July 19, 2017, Elmohamady transferred to Aston Villa for £1 million, reuniting with Bruce once again. He has been a key player for the club ever since.
International Career: Youthful Debut and Continental Successes
Elmohamady represented Egypt at the Under-20 level and played in the 2007 African Youth Championship. He made his senior team debut in 2007 against Côte d'Ivoire. He played in eight of nine qualifiers for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations (CAN), which Egypt won, earning Elmohamady his first international title.
In 2009, he was sent off in the Confederations Cup match against Brazil, resulting in a penalty that cost Egypt the game. He scored his first international goal in 2010 against Benin. Elmohamady has been part of Egypt's winning teams in the 2008 and 2010 CANs.
