Early Life and Club Career
Ivano Bordon, an esteemed Italian goalkeeper, was born in the Marghera municipality of Venice. He made his professional debut for the legendary Inter Milan in 1970, where he spent the majority of his illustrious club career.
During his tenure with the "Nerazzurri," Bordon amassed 281 appearances in Serie A alone. He led the team to two Italian Championship titles, a remarkable feat achieved nine years apart. Additionally, he secured two Italian Cup victories while at the Milanese club.
International Career
From 1978 to 1984, Bordon represented the Italian national team. He was part of the squad for three major tournaments: the 1978 and 1982 FIFA World Cups, and the 1980 UEFA European Championship, which was hosted by Italy. However, in all three instances, he served as the understudy to legendary goalkeeper and team captain Dino Zoff. Despite this, Bordon's contributions during the 1982 World Cup earned him a World Cup medal.
With Zoff's retirement from international football, Bordon gained more opportunities to defend the Italian goal. Between 1978 and 1984, he made 21 appearances for the "Azzurri."
Later Club Career and Retirement
In 1983, Bordon left Inter Milan and joined Sampdoria, where he played a key role in the development of a formidable team that would later reach the final of the European Cup. During his time with the Genoese club, Bordon won his third Italian Cup.
Bordon concluded his playing career with spells at modest clubs Sanremese and Brescia.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player in 1993, Bordon embarked on a coaching career. He served as a goalkeeping coach at Napoli, Juventus, and Inter Milan. From 2004 onwards, he became the goalkeeping coach for the Italian national team. He was part of the coaching staff when Italy triumphed at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Bordon became the only person to have been involved in both the 1982 and 2006 FIFA World Cup victories for Italy. His exceptional contributions to Italian football extend beyond his playing abilities, proving his enduring impact on the sport.
