Early Life and Education

Alexander Khadzimuratovich Galazov was born on October 15, 1929, in the village of Humalag in the North Ossetian Republic. His father was unjustly arrested in 1938 and died in prison years later; his father was posthumously rehabilitated.

In 1952, Galazov graduated from the North Ossetian State Pedagogical Institute. He then worked as a teacher of Russian language and literature and as deputy headmaster at Humalag Secondary School from 1952 to 1958.

Career in Education

From 1958 to 1959, Galazov served as an inspector of schools for the Ministry of Education of the North Ossetian ASSR. He then became the director of the Institute for Advanced Teacher Training from 1959 to 1960.

Galazov became an instructor for the North Ossetian Regional Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) on education in 1960. He subsequently held the position of Minister of Education for the North Ossetian ASSR from 1961 to 1975.

In 1974, Galazov defended his dissertation for the degree of Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences on the topic "Organizational and Pedagogical Problems of Implementing Universal Secondary Education in a National Republic (On the Example of the North Ossetian ASSR)." From 1975 to 1976, he served as Deputy Chairman of the Council of Ministers of the North Ossetian ASSR.

Political Career in the Soviet Union

Galazov became the Rector of the North Ossetian State University named after K.L. Khetagurov from 1976 to 1990. In 1990, he was appointed First Secretary of the North Ossetian Regional Committee of the CPSU.

From 1990 to November 1991, Galazov served as Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of North Ossetia. He was also a member of the Central Committee of the CPSU from 1990 to 1991.

Post-Soviet Political Career

After the August 1991 putsch, Galazov declared a state of emergency in North Ossetia and established the Republican Committee for the State of Emergency. Despite calls for his resignation, he remained in office.

During the armed conflict in South Ossetia, Galazov sanctioned humanitarian aid to the region. He avoided taking proactive measures to blockade Georgia until they were implemented at the grassroots level. Galazov advocated for a peaceful resolution to the status of South Ossetia, recognizing the sovereignty of the republics of South Ossetia, Abkhazia, and Adjara within a Georgian federation.

Role in the Ingush-Ossetian Conflict

Galazov blamed Ingush nationalist extremists for inciting the Ingush-Ossetian conflict in 1992. He opposed North Ossetia's secession from Russia, despite earlier statements supporting its unification with South Ossetia.

Presidency of North Ossetia

Galazov was elected the first President of the Republic of North Ossetia in January 1994, serving until 1998. He continued to engage in socio-political activities, serving on the political council of the Unity party until recently.
