Early Life and Artistic Beginnings

Mitsuro Aikawa, a renowned Japanese artist, was born in 1907 in Mibu-cho, Hiroshima Prefecture. In 1922, he commenced his career at Ibuki Design Co. in Osaka. A year later, he enrolled in Tenrai School in Osaka, where he adopted the name Mitsuro Aikawa.

Move to Tokyo and Recognition

In 1924, Aikawa relocated to Tokyo and attended Taihei Yogakai Institute. His artistic talent shone through when he won First Prize at the 13th Nika-ten exhibition in 1926 under the pseudonym Ai-Mitsu.

Artistic Collaborations and Societies

Together with Masao Tsuruoka and other artists, Aikawa established the Kyogenkai Society in 1927. He played a pivotal role in co-founding the Bijutsu-kyokai (Art and Culture Association) in 1939. A year later, he co-created Shinshingakai (New Artists Association) alongside artists such as Shunsuke Matsumoto and Saburo Aso.

Artistic Accomplishments and International Impact

Aikawa's artistic prowess was recognized when he received the First Prize for landscape painting ("Landscape with Eyes") at the 8th Dokuritsubijutsu-kyokai (Independent Association of Artists) in 1938. His contributions to the art world continued as he left a lasting legacy in Shanghai, where he succumbed to illness in 1946.

Post-War Recognition and Memorialization

In 2007, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo paid tribute to Aikawa's artistic achievements through a memorial exhibition. His works have left an indelible mark on the world of Japanese art, making him one of the most revered artists of his time.
