Akakiy Melitinskiy
Early Life and Education
Saint Acacius was born around 370 AD in the devout Armenian city of Melitene. His parents, who had long been childless, dedicated him to God and entrusted his upbringing to Bishop Otrius of Melitene. Under Otrius's tutelage, Acacius received a thorough education and rose through the ranks of the Church, from reader to priest.
Episcopal Ministry
Upon Bishop Otrius's passing, Acacius was elevated to the episcopal throne of Melitene. As a bishop, he became renowned for his wise leadership and the fervent care he extended to his flock. According to his hagiography, Acacius possessed the gift of performing miracles during his lifetime.
Defender of Orthodoxy
Saint Acacius played a pivotal role in the Third Ecumenical Council (431 AD), where he staunchly defended the doctrine of the two natures of Jesus Christ (divine and human) and his immaculate birth from the Virgin Mary. His unwavering stance against heresy earned him great respect among the Church fathers.
Legacy and Veneration
Saint Acacius passed away around 438 AD, leaving behind a legacy of spiritual wisdom and unwavering faith. He is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox Church, with his feast day celebrated on April 17th according to the Julian calendar. Acacius is remembered as a compassionate pastor, an erudite theologian, and a courageous defender of the true faith.
