Early Life and Inheritance
Akira Mori was born in 1940 and is the President of Mori Trust, a company that owns and manages office and residential spaces and buildings in central Tokyo and other major cities in Japan. The company's portfolio includes 17 hotel complexes, including the recently opened Conrad Tokyo. Akira Mori is one of the top billionaires in Japan, with Forbes estimating his net worth to be over $7 billion.
Akira Mori, along with his older brother Minoru Mori, inherited their father Taikichiro Mori's fortune. Taikichiro Mori founded a construction company and became a professor of business in Yokohama, Japan.
Rise to Success
After World War II, land prices in Tokyo plummeted, and Taikichiro Mori took advantage of the situation by acquiring large plots of land in what is now the central part of Tokyo. At the time, his family was involved in the tobacco business and rice trading for several generations. His family disapproved of his acquisitions, but he took a bold step that would change his life and elevate him to millionaire status. His sons, Minoru and Akira, later joined him in managing the company. Their two other children, Kei and Aiko, did not participate in the family business and became professors at a Japanese university, teaching management activities.
Taikichiro Mori was considered the richest person in Japan according to Forbes in 1991 and 1992.
Succession and Business Expansion
In 1993, Taikichiro Mori passed away, leaving his empire to Minoru and Akira. Unfortunately, the brothers did not find common ground, and a rift emerged in the family business. Even during their father's reign, Minoru and Akira had conflicting views on strategic business planning. As a result, a split occurred, and each brother went on to establish their own business.
Both newly created companies, Minoru's and Akira's, have been steadily growing and generating significant income for their owners. However, analysts predict that Akira Mori's business will be more successful financially. Minoru takes bold steps in reorganizing Tokyo, such as his department store, which is almost a mini-city in the center of Tokyo. There is also a project in Shanghai to construct the tallest building. Almost all of his projects come to fruition.
Akira Mori, on the other hand, focuses more on investments rather than construction planning. As a result, each brother is able to grow their respective fortunes without hindering the other's ideas.
