Early Life and Education

Agyekum Kufuor was born on October 8, 1932, in Kumasi, Gold Coast (present-day Ghana). His father, Opanin Kwaku Amankwa, was a tribal chief, and his mother was Ama Serwaa Amaniampong.

Military Career

After completing high school at Adisadel College, Kufuor joined the British colonial army in 1957. He received training at the Regular Officer's Special Training School in Ghana and then at the Mons Officer Cadet School in the United Kingdom. In 1960, he graduated from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst and was commissioned as a Lieutenant.

Role in the 1966 Coup

In 1966, Kufuor played a key role in the military coup that overthrew President Kwame Nkrumah. As a commander in the 2nd Infantry Brigade, he planned and executed the seizure of key points in Accra. The coup led to the establishment of the National Liberation Council, with Kufuor serving as one of its members and being promoted to Colonel.

Rise to Power

In 1969, Kufuor was appointed Chairman of the National Liberation Council and became Ghana's de facto leader. He served in this role until 1970, when he became Chairman of the Presidential Commission, a transitional government.

Presidency

In 1979, Kufuor was elected President of Ghana. His presidency focused on economic reforms, including the adoption of a market economy and the implementation of structural adjustment programs. He also promoted democratic institutions and civil liberties.

Later Years

After serving two terms as President, Kufuor retired from politics in 2008. He remained active in international affairs, serving as a special envoy for the United Nations and the African Union.

Legacy

Agyekum Kufuor is remembered as a charismatic and visionary leader who played a key role in Ghana's transition to democracy and economic prosperity. He is widely respected as one of the most successful and respected leaders in Ghana's history.
