Jeannine Marie Boylan, a bestselling author, transgender activist, and former opinion writer for The New York Times, is a renowned figure in the literary and LGBTQ+ communities. In December 2023, she became the president of PEN America.
Formative Years and Education
Born in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, Boylan graduated from Haverford School in 1976. She went on to earn a degree from Wesleyan University in 1980, followed by an M.A. in English from Johns Hopkins University.
Academic Career
Boylan began her academic career at Colby College, where she taught from 1988 to 2014. She was named the "Professor of the Year" at Colby in 2000. In 2014, she joined Barnard College as both a Professor of English and Anna Quindlen Writer-in-Residence.
Literary Accomplishments
Boylan has penned thirteen books, including novels, short story collections, and memoirs. Her 2003 memoir, "She's Not There: A Life in Two Genders," garnered critical acclaim as the first book published by an openly transgender American to become a bestseller. The Advocate hailed it as a "foundational part of the trans literary canon." In 2020, she published her memoir "Good Boy: My Life in Seven Dogs."
In collaboration with New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult, Boylan co-authored the novel "Mad Honey," released in October 2022. She contributed opinion pieces to The New York Times from October 2007 to April 2022.

Public Appearances and Media Presence
Boylan has spoken at numerous college campuses, including Harvard, Yale, Cornell, Columbia, and Barnard. She has appeared in various media to discuss her life, books, and activism, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, Larry King Live, The Today Show, 48 Hours, and NPR.
In 2020, Boylan signed the "Letter on Justice and Open Debate," which advocated for free and open expression. However, upon learning about the controversial views of other signatories, she withdrew her support.
Personal Life
Boylan is a transgender woman. She has two children, Zahira and Sean, with Deirdre Boylan, whom she married in 1988. Boylan began her transition in 2000. In 2019, she reflected on her journey: "I've been three or four different women at this point in my life... Fashion was really important to me, passing was really important to me. Appearing cisgender was unfortunately probably more important to me than it should have been... It's the fascinating mystery of life, how we get to become different versions of ourselves."
She resides in New York City and Belgrade Lakes, Maine, with her wife.
Awards and Recognition
In honor of the 50th anniversary of the first LGBTQ Pride parade, Queerty recognized Boylan among fifty heroes "leading the nation toward equality, acceptance, and dignity for all people."
