A Life in Journalism

Early Life and Education

Alan Johnston was born in Lindi, Tanganyika (now Tanzania), to Scottish parents, Graham and Margaret Johnston. He attended Dollar Academy in Dollar, Scotland, and went on to earn a journalism degree from Cardiff University in Wales. Johnston later pursued a master's degree from the University of Dundee.

Career at the BBC

Johnston joined the BBC in 1991. Throughout his career, he has served as a correspondent in various conflict-ridden regions, including Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and the Gaza Strip.

Kidnapping in Gaza

On March 12, 2007, Johnston was kidnapped by the Palestinian extremist group Army of Islam while on assignment in the Gaza Strip. He was held captive for 114 days before being released on July 4.

Aftermath of the Kidnapping

Following his release, Johnston became an honorary Doctor of Letters from Robert Gordon University in 2007. He has since continued his work as a journalist, reporting on international affairs and human rights issues.
