Greco-Roman Wrestling Champion

Ismael Borrero Molina was a highly decorated wrestler who competed in both Greco-Roman wrestling for Cuba and the United States. Born in Cuba, Borrero achieved significant success on the international stage.

Early Success in Cuba

In 2015, Borrero claimed a bronze medal at the Pan American Games. The following year, he captured the gold medal at the Pan American Wrestling Championships representing Cuba. He went on to earn four Cuban national championships.

Emigration to the United States

In 2017, Borrero immigrated to the United States and relocated to Jersey City. Two years later, he began competing for his adopted country.

Continued Success in the United States

Borrero continued to excel in wrestling after joining the U.S. team. He won a bronze medal at the Pan American Wrestling Championships in 2023 and a silver medal at the same event in 2024.

Olympic Qualification and Tragedy

In 2024, Borrero qualified the United States for the 2024 Summer Olympics in the 97kg weight class at the Pan American Olympic Qualifier in Acapulco, Mexico. However, he narrowly missed out on representing the U.S. at the Olympics after placing second at the U.S. Wrestling Trials.

Tragically, Borrero's life was cut short in July 2024 when he suffered cardiac arrest during a friendly soccer match. He was hospitalized for eight weeks and passed away on September 23, 2024, at the age of 33.
