Albertine Frederica of Baden-Durlach, born on November 3, 1682, was a German princess and the wife of Christian August of Holstein-Gottorp, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp. She was also the mother of Adolf Frederick, King of Sweden, and the grandmother of Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia.
Early Life and Family
Albertine Frederica was the eighth child of Margrave Frederick VII Magnus of Baden-Durlach and his wife Augusta Marie of Holstein-Gottorp. Her paternal grandmother, Christina Magdalena of the Palatinate-Zweibrücken, was a Swedish princess, which granted her son, Adolf Frederick, the right to claim the Swedish throne. Albertine Frederica was born in Baden, a wealthy region of southwestern Germany bordering France.
Marriage and Children
On September 2, 1704, Albertine Frederica married Christian August of Holstein-Gottorp. Their marriage produced 11 children, including:

Russian Connections
In 1739, Albertine Frederica accompanied her daughter Johanna Elizabeth and granddaughter Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst to the court of Prince-Bishop Adolf Frederick of Eutin. This visit marked the first meeting between Sophie and Karl Peter Ulrich of Holstein-Gottorp, who would later become Emperor Peter III of Russia.
Recognition and Legacy
On March 15, 1743, Albertine Frederica was awarded the Order of Saint Catherine. She is remembered as a German princess who played a significant role in the European royal dynasties, bridging the gap between the German and Russian imperial houses. Albertine Frederica died on December 4, 1755, at the age of 73.
