Biography of Alejandro Fernandez
Alejandro Fernandez, the son of famous Vicente Fernandez, is a Mexican music artist who proudly upheld his family traditions and made Mexican rancheras popular among the younger generation with his presence on the stage. His velvety voice and depth of sound made fans swoon. He was born in Mexico City on April 24, 1971, but surprisingly registered in Guadalajara, Jalisco - known worldwide as the "Birthplace of Mariachi." As the son of Vicente Fernandez, a popular music idol in Mexico, and Maria del Refugio Abarca, Alejandro Fernandez grew up in a family with deeply rooted traditional values. At the age of four, Alejandro was ready to perform alongside his father - Vicente Fernandez, whose voice brought fame to Mexican "rancheras" and introduced them to a new generation. Alejandro, of course, had the privilege of being his father's first student and that's where he began. As it always happens, where there is an artist, there are also problems - concerns about ascent, anxieties related to artistic and professional growth, difficulties in finding new ideas to develop a personal style rooted in tradition that could evolve with time. Step by step, this evolution in Alejandro Fernandez's career still happened - starting from his childhood, it transitioned into his youth, and now has entered his mature and fulfilling life. From a young age, he demonstrated a special sensitivity to music. His first performance took place at the age of 5 in front of an audience of 10,000 people. After performing the song "Alejandra," he cried from nervous tension and emotions coming from such a huge crowd.
At the age of 6, he made his film debut in the movie "Picardia Mexicana." This was his first paid job. At that time, Alejandro had no idea that he would later become a famous singer. He simply enjoyed spending time with his family and gladly agreed to sing with his father when asked. His first debut recording took place as a duet with his father and was called "Our Love" (Amor de los dos). The song was a universal success, and an album followed, where Alejandro performed a solo song - "El Andariego" (The Wanderer). He was only 19 years old at the time. Two years later, his first self-titled album - "Alejandro Fernandez" - confirmed Alejandro's musical talent, as well as the depth and harmony in his voice. To promote this album, Alejandro went on a tour throughout Mexico and some countries in the United States. The following album "Piel de Nina" (Child's Skin), a result of collaboration with maestro Pedro Ramirez, continued to attract attention to this new singer who, due to his heritage and profession, was simply destined to rejuvenate Mexican "rancheras." "Acabe por Llorar" (I Ended Up Crying), "Cenizas" (Ashes), "A la Vera del Camino" (By the Roadside) - these are just some of the most popular songs from his first album.
Expanding His Horizons
Although Alejandro Fernandez, due to his culture and upbringing, adhered to the purest Mexican traditions, he felt the need to broaden his horizons. After completing elementary and high school, he enrolled at Atemajac Valley University to study architecture. Born in Mexico and raised in Guadalajara, Alejandro's musical knowledge was an inherited gift, not just a result of his father's influence. He participated in gatherings of the most deeply rooted parties in popular Mexican culture, which were passionately celebrated then and continue to live on. His musical achievements won over architecture, and his next albums were a combination of traditional Latin American romantic songs, which Alejandro Fernandez very successfully adapted to his style, highlighting the most romantic aspects of his personality. Here are some songs - "Conozco a los Dos" (I Know Both of Them), "A Pesar de Todo" (Despite Everything), "The Glory is You", "A la Vera del Camino" (By the Roadside). The overall title of the album was "Grandes Exitos a la Manera de Alejandro Fernandez" (Greatest Hits in the Style of Alejandro Fernandez). The work featured songs by famous composers such as Armando Manzanero, Jose Antonio Mendez, and Luis Demetrio.
Two albums that followed, "Que Seas Muy Feliz" (May You Be Very Happy) and "Muy Dentro de mi Corazon" (Deep Inside My Heart, double platinum), were a new stage in Alejandro's career. With songs like "La Mitad que me Faltaba" (The Half That I Was Missing), "Llorando Penas" (Crying Sorrows), "Como Quien Pierde Una Estrella" (Like Someone Who Loses a Star), "Nube Viajera" (Traveling Cloud), and "Es la Mujer" (She is the Woman), he gained admiration from a younger audience and achieved his most important goal - merging the new generation with Mexican musical traditions. The album "Me Estoy Enamorando" (I'm Falling in Love) was a giant leap into new horizons of music for Alejandro. Romantic ballads and pop-style songs, without losing the Mexican essence, won fans from various backgrounds - Latin America, North America, and Europe. The first four hits from this album - "Me Estoy Enamorando" (I'm Falling in Love), "Si Tu Supieras" (If You Knew), "En el Jardin" (In the Garden, a duet with Gloria Estefan), "Yo Naci para Amarte" (I Was Born to Love You) - topped the Latin charts of Billboard's magazine. The album was certified multi-platinum in Latin America, selling over 2.2 million copies worldwide.
Continued Success
The album "Christmastime in Vienna," released on Christmas 1999, was a collection of traditional Christmas songs performed by Alejandro Fernandez together with Placido Domingo and Patricia Kaas. This album brought joy to every Alejandro Fernandez fan because it gave his audience a chance to hear his English-language performances. The album presented beautiful songs recorded with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, including "The Drummer Boy," "White Christmas," and "Silent Night." This album once again showcased Alejandro's unique music style and brought his talent to a wider audience. The album "Mi Verdad" (My Truth), with beautiful ballads, brought everyone back to the traditional "ranchera" style. Some songs - "Loco" (Crazy), "Si He Sabido Amor" (If I've Known Love), "Mentirosos" (Liars). This album made lovers of Alejandro's voice swoon. The song "Si He Sabido Amor" became the theme song for the successful TV series "Infierno En El Paraiso" (Hell in Paradise), which aired during primetime.
In 2000, Alejandro returned to the music scene with his new album "Entre Tus Brazos" (In Your Arms), which was his eighth album in his fruitful career. His producer, for the second time, was Emilio Estefan Jr. The most successful hit of this album was called "Quiereme" (Love Me) - it made a huge impression on Alejandro's fans. The album featured exceptional composers such as Kike Santander, Roberto Blades, Shakira, Francisco Cespedes, and these are just some of the names. "Entre Tus Brazos" is a romantic-style album with an undeniable Latin flavor.
In his young age, Alejandro gained the love in the hearts of women worldwide and, at the same time, earned the approval and admiration of many men. He is "Potrillo," a symbol of Mexican culture. His style brings traditional "ranchera" music to a new generation. His songs will be listened to in our homes now and forever... Alejandro Fernandez, 1992
