Early Life and Education

Alexander Nikolayevich Zyryanov was born on August 28, 1830, in the village of Verkhniy Yar, Shadrinsky Uyezd, Perm Governorate. In 1846, he graduated from the Dalmatov Theological School.

Career as a Local Historian and Ethnographer

From 1846 to 1861, Zyryanov worked as a volost clerk and later as a lawyer for peasant affairs in Dalmatovo. Throughout his career, he dedicated himself to the study of the history, archaeology, economics, ethnography, meteorology, culture, and daily life of the Shadrinsky Uyezd.

Contributions to Ethnography and Folklore

In the 1850s, Zyryanov began collecting and recording folk songs and tales from the Shadrinsky Uyezd. His work was included in the second volume of Alexander Afanasyev's "Russian Folk Tales" (1889) and the first and second volumes of Dmitry Smyshlyaev's "Perm Collection."

Archaeological and Historical Research

In the 1860s, Zyryanov expanded his research to include the archaeology and history of the region. He published articles such as "On the Kurgans in the Shadrinsky Uyezd," "Materials for a Description of the Shadrinsky Uyezd," and "About the City of Shadrinsk."

Economic Studies

In the 1870s, Zyryanov also studied the economic life of the Shadrinsky Uyezd. He authored the important work "Incomes in the Shadrinsky Uyezd" (1876), which was published in the "Proceedings of the Imperial Free Economic Society."

Historical Contributions

Among Zyryanov's most significant works were "Materials for the History of Settlement in the Trans-Urals" (1870-1876) and "Peasant Uprising in the Shadrinsky Uyezd in 1843" (1879).

Legacy

In the 1880s, Zyryanov continued to publish articles on the kurgans, settlements, and history of the Shadrinsky Uyezd. As a member of the Imperial Geographical Society, he conducted meteorological observations for 20 years in his hometown and in Dalmatovo.

Honors and Recognition

Zyryanov's dedication to his work was recognized with awards including the Silver Medal of the Russian Geographical Society (1860) and the Grand Silver Medal of the Russian Free Economic Society. He passed away on November 12, 1884, in Dalmatovo, Shadrinsky Uyezd, Perm Governorate, leaving behind a legacy as a pioneering ethnographer, local historian, and advocate for the cultural heritage of his region.
