Birth and Early Education

Nikolai Alexandrovich Gurevich was born on March 9, 1835, in Ufa, Russia. His family moved to Germany in 1834, where he attended a classical gymnasium and graduated in 1846 with a gold medal.

Medical Training and Career

In 1847, Gurevich enrolled in the Saint Petersburg Imperial Medico-Surgical Academy, where he earned his medical degree in 1852. He began practicing as a physician early on, giving private lessons even during his gymnasium years. While in medical school, he served as an assistant at Saint Petersburg's Kalinkin City Hospital, where he gained valuable experience treating cholera patients.

Appointment to Ufa

In 1853, Gurevich returned to Ufa and became the medical officer for the Orenburg Specific Office. This marked the beginning of his extensive and fruitful career in various fields.

Statistical Work

In 1864, Gurevich was appointed secretary of the Ufa Provincial Statistical Committee, a position he held until his retirement in 1891. During this time, he supervised numerous statistical projects, including:

- Three censuses of the Ufa population (1865, 1879, 1886)

- Statistical investigations on economics, demographics, and public health

- Publication of various statistical reports and journals
