Early Life and Education
Mikhail Viktorovich Mashkov was born on September 21, 1957, in Donetsk, Ukraine. In 1974, he enrolled in the Donetsk Polytechnic Institute (DPI) to pursue a degree in Electronic Computing Machines (ECMs). Exceptional in his studies, Mashkov graduated with honors in 1979, completing a thesis on the design of high-performance parallel systems for solving partial differential equations. His undergraduate research earned him the prestigious second-degree diploma in the All-Union competition for student scientific works.
Academic Career at DonNTU
Mashkov joined the DPI faculty as an assistant in the Department of ECMs in 1979. In 1983, he began pursuing a doctoral degree at the department under the supervision of Professor Yevgeny Bashkov. His research focused on the development of high-performance computer graphics systems, culminating in his dissertation defense in 1987.
From 1989 onwards, Mashkov served as an associate professor in the Department of ECMs. His international collaborations included a 10-month research fellowship at the University of Stuttgart's Institute of High-Performance and Distributed Supercomputers in Germany. In 1994, he enrolled in a doctoral program at the DonNTU Department of ECMs under the guidance of Professor Valery Svyatnoy, specializing in high-performance modeling environments.
Positions and Leadership at DonNTU
Mashkov's dedication to DonNTU extended beyond his academic role. He held various positions, including:
- Director of the DonNTU Technopark (since 2000)
- Deputy Director of the Institute of International Cooperation (1997)
- Coordinator of the Ukrainian Scientific and Educational Network URAN's regional node at DonNTU (1997)
- Assistant to the Rector (2006)
- Dean of the Faculty of Computer Engineering and Informatics (2007)Research and Collaboration
Mashkov's research interests encompass a wide range of areas, including computer modeling, high-performance parallel computing, and the development of Internet infrastructure. He has collaborated extensively with the University of Stuttgart under agreements on scientific and technical cooperation. Some of his notable contributions include:
- Pioneering the use of modern computer modeling methods to analyze artifacts and identify modeling elements, leading to the concepts of archaeo- and astromorphic modeling
- Discovery of numerous examples of modeled elements throughout human civilization, including in ancient Egyptian pyramids and the Phaistos Disc
- Interpretation of Stonehenge and similar structures as specific types of archaeo-planetarium
- Development of a robust localization of the legendary lost civilization of Atlantis, using novel computer modeling techniques
- Introduction of the concept of "cognitive expeditions" to validate astromorphic models through direct field investigations
