Early Life and Education
Alexander Goncharuk was born in the former Soviet Union. In 1978, he graduated from the Sevastopol Higher Naval Engineering School. Nine years later, he obtained a degree in electrical power systems from the Grechko Naval Academy in Leningrad.
Business Career
Telecommunications IndustryGoncharuk's business career began in 1987 when he served as a senior officer in the Main Directorate of Shipbuilding and the Main Staff of the USSR Navy. In 1996, he joined the Russian conglomerate AFC Sistema. He initially served as the head of the telecommunications department and vice president for telecommunications. Over the next seven years, he played a pivotal role in leading the corporation's telecommunications business.
President of AFC Sistema
In 2006, Goncharuk was appointed president of AFC Sistema after significantly growing the revenue of the holding's high-tech division. During his tenure as president, he spearheaded the acquisition of 25.1% of Svyazinvest, Russia's largest fixed-line operator, and a controlling stake in the Indian mobile operator Shyam Telelink. He also oversaw the IPOs of three of AFC Sistema's subsidiaries: Komstar-OTS, Sistema Gals, and Sitronics.
Under Goncharuk's leadership, AFC Sistema's capitalization increased by more than 40% to $16.2 billion. During his time as president, he acquired a 2% stake in the company.
Retirement from Presidency
In May 2008, Goncharuk stepped down as president of AFC Sistema and joined the company's board of directors. His departure was attributed to fatigue after 12 years of service in the company. The presidential elections of 2008 were also cited as a possible factor, as they represented a sensitive period for a large company like AFC Sistema, whose business was influenced by politics.
