Mehmet Emin Karamehmet is a Turkish entrepreneur and the owner of the leading mobile communication company, Turkcell. The company, of which Karamehmet is a shareholder, is considered the largest operator in the country and has its headquarters in Istanbul. Founded in 1994, Turkcell quickly became a prominent player in the mobile communication industry in Turkey.
Diversified Business Interests
In addition to his involvement in the mobile communication sector, Karamehmet also has interests in banking, media, and oil. He owns two banks, Pamukbank and Yapi Kredi, and is a co-owner of newspaper assets. His most significant business venture is his oil company, which is the largest oil company in Turkey. With an expanding presence, including operations in Iraq, Karamehmet expects his forty-plus oil wells to produce more oil than the entire country of Turkey by 2010.
Success of Turkcell
Under Karamehmet's ownership, Turkcell has experienced rapid growth and success. The company's network now covers nearly ninety percent of Turkey and serves millions of mobile subscribers. A few years ago, Turkcell provided its services to approximately 32 million mobile subscribers and generated a profit of $832.9 million.
Education and Other Roles
Mehmet Emin Karamehmet graduated from Dover College in England and holds an honorary bachelor's degree in science and arts. Currently, he is married and resides in Turkey. Apart from his ownership of Turkcell, Karamehmet serves as the chairman of the board of directors for the Cukurova holding company, which includes Cukurova Havacilik, Cukurova Sanayi, and Banque de Commerce et de Placements S.A. He also fulfills the responsibilities of a board member for Cukurova Insaat Makinalari A.S. After resolving his debts, Karamehmet regained his position in Forbes' list of the world's most significant billionaires.
