Early Life and Military CareerAlexander Ilyich Rodimtev was born on March 10, 1905, into a poor peasant family in the village of Sharlyk, Orenburg Governorate, Russia. As a young man, he worked as a shoemaker before enlisting in the Red Army in 1927. He graduated from the VTsIK Military School in 1932 and served in the cavalry.
Spanish Civil War and Heroism
In 1936, Rodimtev volunteered to fight with the Republican forces in the Spanish Civil War. As a captain in the Republican Army, he led a machine gun squad and distinguished himself at the University City of Madrid, repelling a fascist advance. For his heroism, he was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union in 1937.
World War II
At the outbreak of World War II, Rodimtev commanded an airborne brigade in Ukraine. In August 1941, his brigade fought on the streets of Kiev, holding off the German advance for 20 days. Later, the brigade participated in the defense of Moscow and the battle of Rzhev.
Stalingrad
In August 1942, Rodimtev's brigade was expanded into the 13th Guards Rifle Division, which became part of the 62nd Army defending Stalingrad. On September 27, 1942, the division crossed the Volga River under heavy fire and established a beachhead in the city center. For the next two months, the division played a crucial role in the defense of Stalingrad, holding key positions in the city center and repelling numerous German attacks.
During the battle, Rodimtev's calmness and determination inspired his troops. He visited front-line positions, studying the enemy's tactics and developing plans to counter their attacks. His ability to motivate his soldiers and maintain their morale was a key factor in the defense of Stalingrad.
For his leadership in the Battle of Stalingrad, Rodimtev was awarded a second Hero of the Soviet Union medal on June 2, 1945.
Later Career and Legacy
After the war, Rodimtev held various high-ranking positions in the Soviet Army, including commander of the Guards Rifle Corps and commander of the Northern Group of Forces in East Germany. He retired from active service in 1968 and passed away on April 13, 1977.
