Abraham Moiseevich Zindels: A Life of Bravery and Sacrifice
Early Life and Educationh2 Birth and Family:
Abraham Moiseevich Zindels was born into a Jewish family in the village of Lipovetz, Kyiv Governorate (present-day Ukraine), in 1921.
h2 Education:
Zindels completed 9th grade at a local school and later graduated from the Vinnytsia Construction Technical School. He briefly worked as a turner at the Lipovetz Machine and Tractor Station.
Military Service and Heroic Acts
h2 Joining the Red Army:In 1940, Zindels joined the Red Army and went on to complete his training as a junior lieutenant in 1942.
h2 Battle of Melitopol:
During World War II, Zindels became a platoon commander in the 690th Rifle Regiment. On October 18, 1943, he led three assault groups in the liberation of the city of Melitopol.
h2 Final Sacrifice:
While repelling a counterattack, Zindels found himself surrounded by the enemy. Despite being outnumbered, he continued to fight valiantly. When he realized he was the last survivor, Zindels detonated an anti-tank grenade, killing both himself and several German soldiers.
Honors and Recognition
h2 Hero of the Soviet Union:On November 1, 1943, Zindels was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union for his exceptional bravery and dedication to duty.
h2 Memorials:
Streets in Melitopol and Lipovetz are named in Zindels' honor. A memorial plaque at the Vinnytsia Construction Technical School also commemorates his heroism.
