Early Life and Education
Alexei Komech, an art historian of international renown, was born in 1936. He pursued his education at the Department of Art History, Lomonosov Moscow State University. In 1972, he successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis, and in 1989, he achieved his doctoral degree.
Professional Career
Komech's career began in 1959 at the Research Institute of Architecture. Subsequently, he joined the Scientific and Methodological Council for the Protection of Cultural Monuments at the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1969, he became a researcher at the State Institute of Art History, Ministry of Culture. By 1989, he had risen to the position of Head of the Sector for the History of Ancient Russian Art.
Leadership Roles
From 1990 to 1991, Komech led the Department of Cultural Heritage Protection within the USSR Ministry of Culture. Later, he served as Director of the State Scientific Research Institute of Restoration, Ministry of Culture of Russia, from 1991 to 1993. In 1994, he became the Director of the State Institute of Art History. However, due to health reasons, he stepped down from the post in recent years.
Contributions to Art History
Throughout his illustrious career, Komech authored over 80 scholarly works focusing on the history of Byzantine and Ancient Russian architecture during the 10th to 15th centuries. He also made significant contributions to the history and theory of architectural restoration.
Recognition and Legacy
Komech's expertise was widely acknowledged both in Russia and internationally. He actively participated in the Federal Scientific and Methodological Council for the Protection of Cultural Monuments, eventually becoming its Deputy Chairman in 1996.
