Early Life and Education

Alessandro Nivola, an American actor, was born on June 28, 1972, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father, Pietro S. Nivola, was a political science professor and author of the book "Laws of the Landscape: How Policies Shape Cities in Europe and America," while his mother was an artist. Nivola's paternal grandfather, Costantino Nivola, was a renowned Italian sculptor, and his maternal grandmother, Ruth Guggenheim, was a Jewish refugee from Germany. He also has a brother named Adrian. Nivola completed his education at Philips Exeter Academy and earned a degree from Yale University.

Personal Life

Nivola is married to actress Emily Mortimer, and the couple welcomed their son Samuel on September 23, 2003.

Acting Career

Nivola began his acting career while still studying at Yale University. He landed the lead role in the Seattle production of Athol Fugard's play "Master Harold... and the Boys." The play was initially staged at Yale Theatre in 1982 and later performed on Broadway and worldwide until it was banned by the authorities in South Africa. After college, Nivola made his Broadway debut in the play "A Month in the Country" (1995), portraying the young lover of Helen Mirren's character. In 1996, he appeared in the NBC miniseries adaptation of Danielle Steel's novel "Ring." He also played the old-fashioned husband of Joanne Going in the film "Inventing the Abbotts" (1997).

In the same year, Nivola gained recognition for his role in the action thriller "Face/Off," where he portrayed a schizophrenic paranoid younger brother of Nicolas Cage's character. His performance as Pollux Troy deeply impressed audiences and garnered critical acclaim. Nivola even underwent British accent training to play the role of a mysterious stranger from the past in the film "I Want You" (1998). He went on to star in the thriller "Best Laid Plans" (1999) and portrayed an Englishman in the film adaptation of Jane Austen's novel "Mansfield Park" (1999).

In 2002, Nivola played a rock singer in the drama film "Laurel Canyon," alongside Frances McDormand. He also became the face of GAP in their "For Every Generation" campaign that year. Nivola's filmography includes "Imprint" (2002), "Carolina" (2003), "The Clearing" (2004), "Junebug" (2005), "Turning Green" (2005), "The Darwin Awards" (2006), and "Grace Is Gone" (2007). He dedicated himself to the "Goal!" trilogy and received praise from the creators, leading to his involvement in the sequels. In 2007, Nivola appeared in projects such as "The Girl in the Park" as Chris and the TV series "The Company" as Leo Kritzki.

In 2008, Nivola starred as Dr. Paul Faulkner in the horror film "The Eye," alongside Jessica Alba. Currently, he is involved in the projects "Five Dollars a Day" (2008), where he plays a young man imprisoned for his father's crimes, and "Chess" (2009).
