Alex Katz was born on July 24, 1927, in Brooklyn, New York. His artistic journey began at Cooper Union in New York from 1946 to 1949, followed by the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in Maine from 1949 to 1950.

Katz's canvases often feature his wife, Ada, and their children as central subjects. While his first solo exhibition was held in New York in 1954, widespread recognition has only graced him in recent decades. The Colby College in Waterville, Maine, houses a significant collection of his works.
