Early Life and Professional Beginnings
Alex Mineiro, born Alex Rodrigo Dias da Costa, is a retired Brazilian footballer who played as a striker. He began his professional career in 1996 at America Mineiro, a club based in Belo Horizonte.
Success at Cruzeiro and Atletico Paranaense
In 1997, Alex joined Cruzeiro, one of the strongest clubs in Brazil at the time. He played a key role in their victory in the Copa Libertadores that year. After a few unsuccessful years, Alex moved to Atletico Paranaense in 2001, where he formed a formidable partnership with Kebele Pereira. His remarkable hat-trick in the first leg of the championship final against Sao Caetano helped Atletico secure a 4-2 victory. He later scored another crucial goal in the second leg, ensuring their triumph in the competition.
Recognition and World Cup Exclusion
Alex's impressive performances earned him the title of Brazilian Footballer of the Year and a place in the Brazilian Serie A Team of the Year for 2001. Despite this recognition, he was surprisingly omitted from Brazil's squad for the 2002 World Cup by then-coach Luis Felipe Scolari.
Injury and Triumph in the Campeonato Paulista
In 2005, Alex suffered a serious knee injury, which sidelined him for a significant period. However, he made a remarkable comeback in 2008, becoming the top scorer in the Campeonato Paulista with 15 goals for Palmeiras. This victory marked the club's first triumph in the tournament since 1996.
Retirement and Legacy
Alex retired from football in 2009 after a successful spell at Gremio in Porto Alegre. He is remembered as a skilled and prolific striker who won numerous titles throughout his career. Despite his exclusion from the 2002 World Cup squad, he remains highly respected for his contributions to Brazilian football.
