Early Life and Education
Mustafa-Jemile Abdülvab (born December 12, 1943) is a Ukrainian politician and journalist who has served as a member of the Verkhovna Rada, the Ukrainian parliament, since 1998. He is known for his advocacy for the rights of the Crimean Tatar people, an ethnic minority group indigenous to Crimea.
Abdülvab was born into a Crimean Tatar family in the village of Büyük Süyren, Crimea, then a part of the Soviet Union. His family was deported to Central Asia during the Stalinist regime, and he spent his childhood in Uzbekistan. In 1967, he returned to Crimea and enrolled in the philological faculty of Simferopol State University.
Journalism Career
After graduating from university, Abdülvab worked as a journalist for the Crimean Tatar newspaper "Lenin Bayrağı." In 1969, he became the editor of the newspaper's youth supplement, "Gençlik." His writings often focused on the plight of the Crimean Tatar people, who had been denied their right to self-determination and were subject to discrimination.
Political Career
In 1990, Abdülvab was elected to the Supreme Council of Crimea. He played a leading role in the Crimean Tatar national movement and was a vocal advocate for the repatriation of Crimean Tatars to their homeland. In 1991, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
As a member of parliament, Abdülvab has served on various committees, including the Committee on Human Rights, National Minorities, and International Relations. He has also been a member of the Ukrainian delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe.
Human Rights Activism
Throughout his career, Abdülvab has been a tireless advocate for human rights, particularly for the rights of Crimean Tatars. He has condemned the Russian occupation of Crimea and the persecution of Crimean Tatars by Russian authorities. In 2016, he was awarded the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought by the European Parliament.
Personal Life
Abdülvab is married and has three children. He speaks fluent Russian, Ukrainian, Crimean Tatar, Turkish, and Polish. He is also an avid reader and enjoys classical music.
