Biography of Alexander Barkashov
Early Life and CareerAlexander Barkashov, a former leader of the Russian National Unity, was born in 1953 in Russia. He worked as an electrician at the Moscow Contact-Cable Network Service from 1970 to 1972. Barkashov then served in the Armed Forces from 1972 to 1974. After his military service, he worked as an electrician at the Moscow Heat and Power Plant from 1974 to 1985. In 1985, he joined the organization "Pamiat" and became its head.
Involvement with Russian National Unity
In May 1988, Barkashov became the Chief of Staff for the National-Patriotic Front "Pamiat." In 1989, he was elected Deputy Chairman of the People's Patriotic Front "Pamiat." In October 1990, Barkashov founded the movement "Russian National Unity" (RNE). During the October 1993 events, Barkashov actively participated in the armed conflict as a supporter of the Russian Supreme Council. However, he left the Russian Federation Council building on October 4, 1993, and went into hiding. He was later arrested on December 31, 1993, and released in February 1994 under amnesty.
Political Career and Controversies
In January 1996, Barkashov's initiative group was registered by the Central Election Commission for his candidacy for the presidency of Russia. However, he decided not to submit the signature sheets to the Central Election Commission. In 1999, Barkashov led the electoral list of the "Spas" movement. His federal candidate list for the State Duma elections was canceled by the Central Election Commission on November 25, 1999. In September 2000, Barkashov was expelled from the Russian National Unity movement.
Personal Life
Barkashov is married to Valentina Petrovna Barkashova, and they have two sons and a daughter. He has a background in karate and has a black belt in the "Shotokan" style. Barkashov is known for his interest in astrology and his admiration for Adolf Hitler. He has expressed his beliefs in maintaining Russian interests and has been critical of non-Russian influence in Russian culture, business, and banking.
