A Legendary Ukrainian Director

Albert Sarkisovitch Barseghyan, a renowned Ukrainian director, was born on January 10, 1929, in Batumi, Georgia. He made significant contributions to the Ukrainian theatre, serving as artistic director of the Kharkiv Academic Russian Drama Theatre named after A.S. Pushkin, and was also a professor and academician of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of Ukraine.

Early Career and Achievements

In 1953, Barseghyan graduated from the Kharkiv State Theatre Institute and embarked on his career as a director at the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Ukrainian Traveling Theatre. From 1956 to 1962, he served as artistic director of the Lviv Young Spectator Theatre named after M. Gorky. Later, from 1962 to 1964, he directed the Odessa Operetta Theatre.

Kyiv and Kharkiv Years

In 1964, Barseghyan became the director of the Kyiv Young Spectator Theatre, where he staged highly acclaimed productions. Notably, his 1964 staging of "Young Guard" by A. Fadeev earned him the Lenin Komsomol Prize. He also directed the Kyiv Operetta Theatre from 1970 to 1973.

In 1975, Barseghyan relocated to Kharkiv and assumed the role of artistic director of the Kharkiv State Academic Russian Drama Theatre named after A. Pushkin. As head of the theatre, he directed over 80 productions from Ukrainian, Russian, and international classical and contemporary playwrights.

Pedagogical Influence

While directing, Barseghyan also pursued a successful career as an educator. He led an acting studio at the Kyiv Operetta Theatre and was head of the directing department at the Kharkiv Institute of Arts named after I. Kotlyarevsky. Many of his students have gone on to become acclaimed directors in Ukraine and beyond.

Public Recognition and Honors

Barseghyan has received numerous accolades for his contributions. He was awarded the title of People's Artist of Ukraine, laureate of the "Kharkivite of the Century" regional rating, and "Honorary Citizen of Kharkiv" in 2006. He has been recognized with the Order of the Red Banner of Labor (1986), the Medal of Pushkin (2007), and the Order of Merit III degree (2004). Additionally, he was honored with the Honorary Diploma of the Kharkiv City Council and the special prize for "Dedication to Art" in the "People's Recognition" contest.
