Saint Alexander the Great, Founder of the Acoemetae

Saint Alexander, a revered Orthodox saint, was the founder and first abbot of the Acoemetae monastery, known for its continuous psalmody.

Early Life and Monasticism

Born on an Aegean island, Alexander grew up in Constantinople and served as a soldier. However, he later embraced monasticism in a Syrian monastery near Antioch. After spending four years in the monastery, he withdrew to the desert for seven years of solitude.

Desert Ministry

In the desert, Alexander preached Christianity to nomadic tribes, baptizing the pagan city governor Ravula, who later became the Bishop of Edessa. Attracting followers, Alexander founded a monastery near the Euphrates River, where about 400 monks resided.

Continuous Psalmody

Alexander introduced a revolutionary concept to the monastery: unceasing psalmody, earning it the nickname "the monastery of the sleepless." The monks were divided into 24 prayer shifts, ensuring that the Psalms were sung around the clock.

Constantinople and Gomon

Around 420 AD, Alexander relocated to Constantinople and established a monastery with a similar rule to his Euphrates monastery. However, he and his disciples faced persecution from Nestorians, forcing them to retreat to Gomon on the Asian shore of the Bosporus. Alexander died and was buried in this monastery.

Hagiography and Veneration

Alexander's first biography was written shortly after his death (c. 450-460 AD) by an unknown author. His memory as a saint was first recorded in the Prologue of Constantine Mokisius (12th century). Today, Saint Alexander is remembered on February 23 (March 7) in leap years and February 23 (March 8) in non-leap years, as well as on July 3 (16).
