Biography of Saint Jane de Chantal

Saint Jane de Chantal was a Catholic saint and the founder of the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary. She was a close companion of Saint Francis de Sales. Jane Fremyot was born on January 23, 1572, in Dijon, Burgundy, France, into an influential Burgundian family. Her father, a lifelong president of the Parliament of Burgundy, raised her as her mother died when she was only 18 months old.

At the age of 20, Jane married Baron de Chantal and gave birth to six children, of whom four survived. However, she became a widow at the age of 28 when her husband was accidentally killed during a hunting expedition. Following her husband's death, Jane took a vow of celibacy. According to legend, during prayer, she saw her spiritual director in a vision. In 1604, while in Paris, she met Saint Francis de Sales and recognized him as the man from her vision. She became his spiritual disciple and collaborator. They maintained a correspondence for many years.

On June 6, 1610, on the feast of the Holy Trinity, Jane and Saint Francis founded the Order of the Visitation of Holy Mary in the city of Annecy, with Jane becoming its first superior. Throughout her life, Saint Jane established a total of 69 monasteries for the order and contributed to its growth. She also wrote several spiritual works, with the most significant being "Spiritual Notes."

Saint Jane de Chantal passed away on December 13, 1641.
