Saint Francis Díaz: A Martyr of the Faith

Early Life and Calling

Francis Díaz, a member of the Dominican Order, was ordained a priest in Spain. In 1736, he set out on a mission to Manila, Philippines. After some time, he was deployed to the province of Fuzhou, China, where he dedicated himself to spreading the Catholic faith.

Mission in China

Despite facing religious unrest in China in the mid-18th century, Díaz remained steadfast in his mission. He refused to return to Manila as advised, opting to stay and minister to the faithful amidst the turmoil.

Persecution and Martyrdom

On June 26, 1746, Díaz was arrested for his Christian preaching. He was imprisoned for over two years, suffering harsh treatment. On October 28, 1748, he was executed by strangulation.

Beatification and Canonization

In 1893, Pope Leo XIII declared Díaz a Blessed, recognizing his unwavering faith and martyrdom. On October 1, 2000, Pope John Paul II canonized Díaz along with 120 other Chinese martyrs, sanctifying his legacy as a martyr of the Catholic Church.

Legacy and Veneration

Francis Díaz is remembered as a courageous priest who devoted his life to spreading the Gospel in the face of persecution. His feast day is celebrated on July 9th in the Catholic Church, honoring his unwavering commitment to the faith and his martyrdom.
