Alexander Glezer: A Pioneer of Russian Contemporary Art
Born in 1934 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Alexander Glezer began his career as an engineer before immersing himself in literary pursuits in 1961. He became a renowned translator, rendering seven books of Georgian poetry into Russian.
Unofficial Art and Emigration
As an active participant in the unofficial art movement in the Soviet Union, Glezer amassed a significant collection of contemporary Russian art. His involvement as an organizer of the infamous "Bulldozer Exhibition" in 1974 led to his emigration.
Museum of Modern Russian Art in Exile
Upon leaving the Soviet Union, Glezer established the Museum of Modern Russian Art in Exile in 1976, first in Mongeron, France, and later in New York City. The museum has remained a vital showcase for Russian contemporary art outside of Russia.
Publishing and Literary Endeavors
Glezer's passion for art extended into the literary realm. He founded the publishing house "Tretiya Volna" ("Third Wave") and published the eponymous almanac and the journal "Strelets." In collaboration with Sergey Petruynis, he compiled the anthology "Russian Poets in the West."
Memoirs and Publications
Throughout his career, Glezer has penned several memoirs and essays on contemporary Russian art. His publications include "Art Under the Bulldozer," "Iskusstvo pod buldozerom," and "Chelovek s dvoinym dnom." His poetry collections include "Dobryye snega," "Nostalgiya," and "Nevernyy mart."
