Early Life and EducationFranz Gabriel Alexander was born on January 22, 1891, in Bucharest, Romania. He initially studied brain physiology under F. Tang before undergoing psychoanalytic training with E. Simmel.
Emigration and Career
In 1932, Alexander emigrated to the United States. He led the Psychoanalytic Institute of Chicago from 1932 to 1956 and became a professor of psychiatry at the University of Illinois in 1952. From 1956 onwards, he served as the director of the psychiatric clinic at Mount Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.
Contributions to Psychoanalysis
Alexander made significant contributions to psychoanalytic theory, particularly regarding the role of self-control in the development of neuroses and the psychology of criminals. He also co-founded the journal "Psychosomatic Medicine."
Pioneering Psychosomatic Medicine
Alexander was a leading figure in the development of psychosomatic medicine. He proposed that chronic psychological stress could lead to the development of physical illnesses such as stomach ulcers, hypertension, asthma, colitis, and arthritis.
