Alexander Bashkalenko: Ukrainian Entrepreneur, Politician, and Statesman
Alexander Bashkalenko is a renowned Ukrainian entrepreneur, politician, and statesman who has made significant contributions to the economic and political landscape of his country. Born into a military family on May 16, 1961, in Makhachkala, Bashkalenko embarked on an illustrious career spanning the public and private sectors.
Military Service
In 1979, Bashkalenko enrolled in the prestigious Riga Red Banner Military-Political College named after Marshal S. Biryuzov. During his military service, he held various leadership positions, including Head of a Branch, Deputy Commander of a Group, Commander of a Group, and Chief of Staff. Upon the dissolution of the Soviet Union, he left the military without a pension and opted not to continue his service in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Entrepreneurial Endeavors
After leaving the military in 1992, Bashkalenko ventured into entrepreneurship. He founded the small enterprise "Lita" (1992-1997) and later led the company "Stil-Plus" from 1997 to 2001. In 2001, he took the helm of "Ekoprod," where he remained as CEO until 2010. During this time, he also joined the Party of Regions in October 2008.
Political Career
Bashkalenko's entry into politics began in March 2010 when he was appointed First Deputy Chairman of the Volyn Regional State Administration. In 2012, he was elected as a deputy to the Volyn Regional Council as part of the Party of Regions' electoral list. He became a member of the Regional Council's standing commission on budget, finance, and pricing policy and joined the deputy group "New Volyn."
Governorship of Volyn Oblast
Following the resignation of Governor Borys Klimchuk and Regional Council Head Volodymyr Voitovych, Bashkalenko was appointed Chairman of the Volyn Regional State Administration on February 5, 2014. However, his brief tenure as governor was marked by controversy. On February 19, 2014, he was seized by supporters of the Euromaidan movement, doused with water, and handcuffed to the stage of the Lutsk Maidan. He was forced to sign a resignation statement and was removed from office on March 2, 2014.
Legacy
Despite the abrupt end to his governorship, Alexander Bashkalenko remains a prominent figure in Ukrainian politics and business. His contributions to the economic development of Volyn Oblast and his involvement in various political roles have left a lasting impact on the region and the nation as a whole. His legacy continues to be shaped by both his achievements and the controversies that have marked his career.
