Early Life and Education

Mykhailo M. Korsun was a Ukrainian publisher born into a wealthy landowner's family. After graduating from the law faculty at Kharkiv University, he pursued an interest in Ukrainian folklore. In 1839, he published "Ukrainian Beliefs," a collection of translated Ukrainian folk tales.

Friendship with Kostomarov

Korsun forged a close friendship with historian Mykola Kostomarov, who supported his publishing endeavors. In 1841, with Kostomarov's backing, Korsun published the almanac "Snip" in Ukrainian. It featured his own poetry, Kostomarov's play "Pereyaslav Night," and translations by Kostomarov, Marta Pisarevska, and Porfiry Korenytsky.

Collaboration and Outreach

As publisher of "Snip," Korsun facilitated the dissemination of Ukrainian literature. He corresponded with Taras Shevchenko and promoted his poem "Haidamaks" in Kharkiv. He also contributed valuable memoirs about Kostomarov to the journal "Russian Archive."

Legacy

Mykhailo Korsun's contributions to Ukrainian publishing and cultural preservation left a lasting legacy. His work helped foster a greater appreciation for Ukrainian folk traditions and promoted Ukrainian literature.
