Alexandru Cosmescu, born in 1922, was a renowned Moldovan prose writer, playwright, and translator. Hailing from an intelligent Romanian-Jewish family, his childhood was spent in the small village of Vornițeni, before his family relocated to Chișinău.
Early Education and Literary Beginnings
Cosmescu attended the Alexandru Donici Gymnasium in Chișinău, where he first showcased his literary talent by publishing poems in the school magazine, "Licurici." He later enrolled in the B.-P. Hașdeu Lyceum, where he befriended fellow Moldovan poets Anatol Gujel and Constantin Condrea.
Influences and Tragedy
After his mother's untimely passing, Cosmescu pursued medical studies at the University of Cluj. His brother's tragic death in 1937 had a profound impact on him. During World War II, he was drafted into the Romanian army and served as a medical assistant at a military hospital in Chișinău.
Career in Journalism and Literature
Following the liberation of Chișinău, Cosmescu joined the newspaper "Tineretul Moldovei" as a special correspondent. He also attended the Higher Journalism Courses at the Central Committee of the Komsomol, marking the beginning of his literary career.
